I have always were built with a soft spot for the initial design Mini. It played a component in my childhood as well as my youth. During the 80s and 90s it appeared like almost everyone had one. Cheap, fun and good-looking little machines. Id like to add reliable to that list, but they had various issues.

Our family favourites was the Mini Countryman. It was the stretched estate version of the classic salon shape. Additionally, it had the later 1275 Clubman style front. A lot of changes in the original, but it still somehow looked like a Mini.

Did we like our old Countryman because it would be an attractive car? Well, no not necessarily. We loved it because unlike the saloon version, were able to get some luggage inside it and disappear for the weekend in relative comfort.

So, now here i am, some 30 years on and the Mini Countryman is making its return. Initially when i first saw the vehicle, I thought Oh no, what they have done! It was like looking at the Minis ugly brother that had been stashed for a long time.

After the initial shock wore off I reminded myself of the past and the original Mini Countryman which wed loved a lot. This helped me awaken towards the extra practicality that this model gives, combined with statement and elegance of the Mini brand (now a part of BMW).

Although this model wisely passes around the faux wood trim from the old classic, still it supports the rugged, ready for action look on the highway.

How does it drive then? Well as you would expect its a different class towards the original. Actually i was driving it for 2 weeks there was no rust! Something you wouldnt happen to be able to say with confidence on the original car.

In these modern days it is probably fairer to check it to like priced cars like the Volkswagen Golf. While you get slightly better class trim within the VW you will not make exactly the same statement. Which means you are actually trading style for finish with regards to these cars.

While it is not up to the aggressive driving abilities of its saloon cousin, it is very capable. Chances are you wont be driving it tough anyway because it will most likely be bought by families.

I wanted to hate this car, but wound up loving it. Im still not sure of the looks, but it does some how manage to capture the essence from the original. A household worker, which also brings a smile for your face. Worth a look for me.
